We have a food industry that does not care about health and a health industry that does not care about food. Our group aims to change that.
Conventional medicine teaches doctors to treat the symptoms of a disease. With conventional medical education, medical students often do not learn about whole food plant based nutrition at any time in their training, instead learning about medications, medical devices, procedures, and surgery.
Although a diet full of animal products and ultra processed food is the greatest risk factor for lifestyle related diseases, training and practice for any health care provider rarely considers whole food plant based nutrition as a solution. This is true in the Piedmont Triad and across the nation.
Our group is united by a belief in the power of lifestyle medicine to heal our community. Lifestyle medicine, with the core component of whole food plant based nutrition, can prevent, treat, and reverse disease by addressing the actual cause of disease rather than just treating the symptoms.
Many of the providers in our group discovered lifestyle medicine after training and practicing in health care for years. Often we saw how our own health dramatically changed with a plant based lifestyle and then we wanted to find, connect with, and support other providers in the area.
With the goal of significantly improving the health of our community, we started the PLANT providers with a small group of health care providers. We now have expanded to over 40 doctors, nurses, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, dietitians, nutritionists, physical therapists, and other health care professionals. The good news is that there have been many proposed changes at the local, state, national, and global levels to upgrade health care completely through food as medicine and lifestyle medicine initiatives. The PLANT providers are dedicated to this mission.
